According to the deleted scenes on the new Criterion Broadcast News, which I am watching right now, William Hurt’s Tom develops as reporter with the help of a very gay source. It’s like a completely different movie. All the President’s Boyz or something.
Also of note:
• Lois Chiles screams dirty things about “bastards” while getting drilled from behind. William Hurt finds the plural confusing.
• Robert Prosky’s wife almost delivers a Beatrice-Straight-in-Network moment, but instead only makes mean faces at him in the mirror when his back is turned.
• We still don’t get the actual scene (included in the trailer) where William Hurt yelps “What I don’t know I can learn; what I do know, no one can teach!”
• A riff on it appears in the alternate ending (where Holly Hunter and Hurt end up together [kind of?]) among all of the weird ad-libbing and kissing. This alternate ending, BTW, is not really worth the twenty-five-year wait.
Also: “It’s not a date, it’s two co-workers attending a professional conclave” remains one of the best lines of dialogue in the history of talkies.
